Note the horses water bucket on the bridge which spans the Copper Cliff Creek, a tributary to Junction Creek. The bridge structure on Balsam Street has been altered over the years, but its location remains unchanged.

CC0111EN: Tom Johnson's Boarding House, 1885 in Copper Cliff, Ontario 500: The Copper Cliff Museum now occupies the site of the first dwelling built in Copper Cliff, which was Thomas Johnson's Boarding House. The boarding house was a large log cabin used by the employees of the Canadian Copper Company. It was demolished in the 1890's to be replaced by a Chinese laundry which was destroyed by fire in 1927. The stone fireplace outside the museum was built in 1927 to mark the site of the town's first dwelling.
CC0112EN: The tennis courts in Copper Cliff, Ontario, 1888 500: The tennis court of 1888 was Copper Cliff's first tennis court to be built. It was located in the area where the I.N.C.O. Occupational Health building and former Copper Cliff Clinic are now located. Note the wooden fence used in the absence of nets. In 2002, the tennis courts are located off Creighton Road on Tennis Court Lane. It is almost the same location as it was in 1888, as it now located behind the I.N.C.O. Occupational Health building.

CC0114EN: The McIntosh Block, located at 1-2 Serpentine Street 500: This building was a well-known Copper Cliff site and continues to be. The original wooden frame block is featured in the top block, which also features the Copper Cliff Fire Brigade. The original store housed numerous businesses, including a dry goods store and a jewellery store. The more modern brick structure was built in 1939 and lodged the popular Spence's Smoke and Gift Shop. In 2002, the McIntosh Block houses apartments, a restaurant, a discount store, and office space.
CC0115EN: Copper Cliff Roast Yard No. 2, circa 1904. 500: The No. 2 Roast Yard ran in a northeasterly direction from the present School Street to halfway down Cobalt Street, although it was popularly thought to be located in Nickel Park. The yard's dimensions were 1000 feet by 125 feet and operated from 1899-1903. Raw ore was roasted over wood fires to remove sulphur from the ore, a process which could consume one to seven months, depending on the amount of ore heaped in the yard. Sudbsequently, the roasted ore was transported to a smelter.

CC0118EN: Granite Street, now Godfrey Drive in Copper Cliff, Ontario 500: This is an interesting photograph for several reasons. It features Godfrey Drive and on the left Creighton Road. St. John the Divine Church is located to the immediate right, while the former police station and library (Pat's Barber Shop) is on the left. The photograph is another glaring example of exactly how barren Copper Cliff once was, as there are no trees evident. Very little has changed in the area. The Anglican church has changed slightly and the road has thankfully been paved.
CC0119EN: Canadian Copper Company circa 1889, showing Little Italy at the far top left, Copper Cliff, Ontario 500: The old smelter was built under the supervision of Dr. E.D. Peters Jr. It was the first smelting operation in Copper Cliff and its initial furnace, blown in on December 24, 1888 had a capacity of 150 tonnes per day. Operations ceased in 1902 and the abandonded buildings were eventually gutted by fire. in 1904, the present smelting operation began.
CC0120EN: Park Street West in Copper Cliff, Ontario circa 1906 500: This photograph was taken from the center of Park Street East looking to Park Street West. Several of the houses shown in this picture are still present in 2002. Copper Cliff's barren streets are obvious, not one tree lines Park Street West, while in 2002 the street is bursting with greenery. In this photo one the right is the Knox Presbyterian Church, at this location since 1953 is the Copper Cliff United Church.
CC0121EN: Clarabelle Lake on Clarabelle Road in Copper Cliff, Ontario 500: Many longtime residents of Copper Cliff remember spending their hot summer days "by the lake". The lake in question was located on Clarabelle Road (now Godfrey Drive). Houses at one time lined the lake but no longer. The area is now heavily poluted. The water in the lake is often dried up and when it is not, it is hardly suitable for swimming.
CC0122EN: The City Tailor in Copper Cliff, Ontario, 1917-1919 500: The City tailor was located at 57 Balsam Street. Isaac Mannisto, the proprietor and tailor is on the left. Beside him is his employee, David Manner. The house remains standing at 57 Balsam and has been a family home since the tailor shop closed in 1919.
CC0123EN: The Bank of Toronto on the corner of Granite and Serpentine Street in Copper Cliff, Ontario 500: The Bank of Toronto was located exactly where the Toronto Dominion Bank stands today. It was replaced by the brick structure in 1915. The stamper which is marked "PAID" was donated to the Copper Cliff Museum and was used in the early 1900's at the Bank of Toronto.
CC0124EN: Men building the Italian Club in 1949 500: The Italian club was built on Craig Street in 1949. It is located on the fromer site of the St. Elizabeth Church. The funds for the building of the club were raised by the Ladies' Society while the Men's Society was responsible for the construction. Many of the homes shown still stand in 2002. The Italian Club is an extremely popular reception and banquet hall.

CC0156EN: Post office on Serpentine Street in Copper Cliff, Ontario, c. 1973 500: In 1973, the decision was made to build a more modern post office and sadly, the beautiful post office building was torn down. A new building was completed in June of 1974 and cost $230000.

Early in 1922, the school was struck by a fire which destroyed all but two rooms. The Public School was closed in June of 1980 and was demolished a couple of years later so that all that remained was the gym. Nowadays, the school is an apartment building. The apartments are housed in the school gym which was modified signifigantly.

The lake in question was located on Clarabelle Road (now Godfrey Drive). Houses at one time lined the lake but no longer. The area is now heavily poluted. The water in the lake is often dried up and when it is not, it is hardly suitable for swimming.
CC0176EN: The International Nickel Company Smelter in 1996 500: The old smelter was built under the supervision of Dr. E.D. Peters Jr. It was the first smelting operation in Copper Cliff and its initial furnace, blown in on December 24, 1888 had a capacity of 150 tonnes per day. Operations ceased in 1902 and the abandonded buildings were eventually gutted by fire. in 1904, the present smelting operation began.

Very little has changed in the area in the past 100 years. The Anglican church has changed slightly and the road has thankfully been paved.

The original store housed numerous businesses, including a dry goods store and a jewellery store. The more modern brick structure was built in 1939 and lodged the popular Spence's Smoke and Gift Shop. In 2002, the McIntosh Block houses apartments, a restaurant, a discount store, and office space.
CC0183EN: The tennis courts in Copper Cliff, Ontario, 1996 500: The tennis court of 1888 was Copper Cliff's first tennis court to be built. It was located in the area where the I.N.C.O. Occupational Health building and former Copper Cliff Clinic are now located. Note the wooden fence used in the absence of nets. In 2002, the tennis courts are located off Creighton Road on Tennis Court Lane. It is almost the same location as it was in 1888, as it now located behind the I.N.C.O. Occupational Health building.

CC0185EN: The Copper Cliff Museum on Balsam Street in 1996. 500: The Copper Cliff Museum now occupies the site of the first dwelling built in Copper Cliff, which was Thomas Johnson's Boarding House. The boarding house was a large log cabin used by the employees of the Canadian Copper Company. It was demolished in the 1890's to be replaced by a Chinese laundry which was destroyed by fire in 1927. The stone fireplace outside the museum was built in 1927 to mark the site of the town's first dwelling.

CC0325EN: Location of the Number 2 Roast Yard in Copper Cliff, Ontario in 1996 500: The No. 2 Roast Yard ran in a northeasterly direction from the present School Street to halfway down Cobalt Street, although it was popularly thought to be located in Nickel Park. The yard's dimensions were 1000 feet by 125 feet and operated from 1899-1903. Raw ore was roasted over wood fires to remove sulphur from the ore, a process which could consume one to seven months, depending on the amount of ore heaped in the yard. Sudbsequently, the roasted ore was transported to a smelter.

It appears that it may be Palm Sunday since the parisioners are holding something resembling palms in their hands. 500: The St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Copper Cliff was built in 1898 and was located on the site of the present churches parking lot. As the congregation of the Church grew, a new place of worship became necessary.
